Overview

Jo Jin-ho, a science cartoonist, sets off in search of an atom.

Book Intro

No one doubts that matter is made up of small atoms. Science textbooks refer to the existence of atoms nonchalantly, and we take them for granted. However, the process of discovering this truth was arduous. The theory that matter is made up of atoms emerged 2,000 years ago, but this theory was only proven about 100 years ago. This is because there was no way to directly identify an atom, only one-hundred-millionths of a centimeter in size, through human senses.

How was it even able to be identified? Although an atom cannot be seen with the naked eye, mankind used various scientific methods to create a new "eye" through which to see atoms. Through the “eye of theory,” discovered was a way to see electrons, kicking off a new era of quantum mechanics. Now, a science cartoonist sets off in search of an atom.
