The Internet of Things, FinTech, virtual reality, robots, unmanned vehicles, artificial intelligence... We’ve heard so much about this and that of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We’ve seen the match between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol, heard of the Google Car project and now use the Internet of Things and K Bank. However, does this mean we truly understand these new technologies because you have heard about them? There is abundant information out there about each technology, but do we know how they are connected to create synergy and what combinations are likely to change the future society, industrial structure, and individual lives? Is the ‘brave new world’ constructed by these new technologies going to be a brave one for you, too?
For over twenty years, Leem Chunsung (Professor of Industrial Engineering at Yonsei University) has been researching the influence of the IT and digital economy on individual lives and businesses, as well as possible strategies in response to such changes. Renowned as one of the top authorities in the field of industrial policy and technology management, Leem has examined and evaluated over 1,000 companies or organizations, proposing strategies for growth and development. In this book, he selects eight key technologies of the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution that will bring about changes in the future, and explores them under four themes: ‘money and dreams,’ ‘knowledge and wisdom,’ ‘work and relaxation,’ and ‘communication and ownership.’ In the midst of cold and distant technological terms, the author finds significance in terms of humanities, society, and philosophy, and sheds light on the forthcoming ‘brave new world’ on the whole. What if artificial intelligence trains robots, unmanned vehicles communicate through the Internet of Things, resolve the computing power of big data using the cloud and combine FinTech with virtual reality? In short, this book helps us grasp the eight key technologies. There is a more important reason why we must read this book. It shows the macroscopic and diachronic significance and social impact of each new technology in a wholly new frame so that readers can observe, reflect and gain insight in accordance with their own situations. Both individual lives and organizational management depend on our insight into future changes. The future has arrived already. Will you be swept away by the huge wave of change, or jump on it? What will you prepare and how?
