Overview

This book examines the meaning of love and desire through the story of conflict between an asocial woman who was adopted to Singapore at the age of seven and a man who lost his lover because of her.

Book Intro

Jane (a.k.a Lim Sun-kyung) is a 38-year-old dancer near retirement with her glory days behind her. Yet, she is not ready to step down. She no longer loves her husband; her teenage daughter Lena grows more distant every day; and their housekeeper Christina is a free-spirited woman who threatens Jane’s position as a mother. In order to get away from them, Jane hides in her own peaceful room—a perfect haven off-limits to her husband and daughter. Jane can only breathe easily inside this secret room.

Jane needs a choreographer who can help her take another leap forward, and thus delay her retirement. Then a world-famous choreographer named Ten gets in touch with her. When they first meet up in a hotel café, she feels uncomfortable with his strange attitude toward her.

Ten introduces himself as Jane’s college alumnus, explaining that they’d briefly met before. Jane has intentionally avoided contact with everyone she knew from back then, so she finds it unpleasant that Ten remembers her from years ago. Ten says that Jane is the only dancer who can bring his work to life, and listening to his vivid description of his choreography, Jane understands what he means. Ten’s choreography is none other than what Jane danced to in college with her teacher Marie and a boy named Max. The dance, where their naked bodies became intertwined in the deep woods, ended in destruction. Marie and Max have long been dead. Jane feels threatened by the fact that Ten knows about the dance. She realizes that Ten has an ulterior motive and tries to get away from him. However, Ten keeps pressuring her to remember the restless breaths she took many years ago. What happened 15 years ago?
