Book Intro

(Russian)

(English) The Physics of Matter

How is mass made? Is light also matter? Why is a magnet a magnet? Why does some matter pass through electricity and some not? Are there second and first dimensional matters? What in the world is “matter”? In the book, “Physics of Matter” the author expounds in detail the world of grapheme, superconductor, quantum hall substance, topological matter that have been discovered in history while exploring the fundamental questions in physics with outstanding and intuitive storytelling. The author, Professor Han Jung Hoon, who was a student of David Thouless, the 2016 winner of Nobel Prize in physics, gave a number of lectures and wrote articles on the achievements of his advisor. In the course of it, he felt the need to elaborate on the subject of “matter” for the limited time and space allotted to him could not cover the important details. In the book, he starts off with the four-element theory of the Ancient Greece philosophers and goes into the topological “matter” in the era of quantum mechanics and science, relating them to the life and historical context of the physicists, and recounts his own experience. Many physicists are now delving into “matter” (of condensed matter physics) in contemporary physics but in South Korea most of the physics books for the general public deal with the “universe” (astrophysics) and particles (from particle physics); this book will be good news for the readers who are athirst for the most recent trend in physics.

About the Author

Junghun Han

(English) The author is professor of physics at Sungkyungwan University. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Washington in 1997 under the tutelage of David Thouless. He has been teaching since 2003 until the present. His main focus of research is quantum magnetic materials and quantum theory of spin waves. His scholastic research achievements are in the theories of multiferroics, skyrmion, and transportation of quantum spin wave. He won a scholarship awarded by Korea Institute for Advanced Studies to study abroad and was the winner of Sebastian Karrer Prize in physics from the University of Washington, as well being the recipient of research grant from Samsung Science & Technology Foundation. He has given a number of lectures to the general public and contributed articles on the achievements of his graduate school advisor, David Thouless, the 2016 winner of Nobel Prize in physics.
