Overview

This is the first collection of essays by novelist Kim Keum-hee, one of Korean literature’s most well-known writers, who received great acclaim for Too Bright Outside for Love, Kyung-ae's Heart, and Only One.

Book Intro

Kim's first collection of essays, finally published after a long period of anticipation, features a selection of 42 short stories ranging from those released immediately after her debut to a recent publication in the webzine Munhakdongne Weekly. This collection is rife with the imagery of childhood and the scent of the sea, as well as the passing of ordinary days endured. For readers who have loved Kim's novels thus far, this collection will be a treasure chest that offers a glimpse into her beginnings, while for newcomers, this collection will be the key to unlocking her infinitely unfolding world.

Every Word but Love is not only the result of a writer who was feverishly active in the 2010s but is also a work in preparation for the upcoming 2020s. This collection of essays, composed of five parts, gives readers a peek into Kim’s world, where her novels were born. Some terms that represent Kim Keum-hee's writings include love and romance, family and friends, society and labor, and landscape of the heart. The first part of this collection includes "Always a Tangerine," which tells the story of Kim's childhood and her family, who helped mold her into the person she is today. In the second part, "Novel Study," Kim's literary history and the journey of inspiration that made her a writer are discussed. "The Night to Record the Night" from the third part tells an intimate story of love and romance, which is her specialty, while the fourth part includes "Yu-mi's Face," a recounting of where Korea stands today from the perspective of a writer with a special interest in social issues and labor. The fifth and final part contains "The Year-End Stroll," which captures Kim's inner landscape as an object of self-reflection. No matter the page, readers will be greeted with Kim's sweet and thoughtful expressions that endure the test of time.
