Overview

This is the first book to compile all known domestic and international research regarding the history of Buyeo, which has always been at the fringes of ancient Korean history, to redefine Buyeo as the starting point and source of the ancient kingdoms of Korea.

Book Intro

As an ancient kingdom founded by Yemaek around the Songhua River basin in northeastearn China, Buyeo boasted a high level of culture and was the second nation state in Korean history (following Gojoseon). Some of Buyeo's ruling forces moved to establish Goguryeo, Baekje, and Balhae. In consideration of the fact that Buyeo influenced the cultures of Silla and the Gaya confederacy, Buyeo can be regarded as the source of the development of ancient kingdoms in Korea.

Previously, Buyeo's history has been pushed away from the center of ancient Korean history. In most historical texts, from when academic research was not active, Buyeo is briefly referred to as the initial state before the establishment of a central kingdom. Written by Professor Song Hojung of Korea National University of Education, the leading expert on Gojoseon in Korea, this book compiles domestic and international research regarding the history of Buyeo, which has always been at the fringes of ancient Korean history, to redefine Buyeo as the starting point and source of the ancient kingdoms of Korea. It is the first book to compose all known information about Buyeo, from its origins to growth and decline, as well as its institutions, life, and culture.

Buyeo emerged in late 3rd-century BCE after the fall of Gojoseon and had close relations with the Chinese Han dynasty. It led the history of the Manchuria while maintaining relationships with neighboring nomadic states. Despite its long and rich history, we only perceive Buyeo to be just one of the early states that did not grow into a full centralized kingdom like Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. This is primarily due to Korea's historical narrative being centered on Gojoseon and Goguryeo, as well as the lack of historical texts and archaeological materials.

In this book, Song outlines how Buyeo has been described and recognized in Korean history since the Goryeo period. Buyeo was typically the subject of attention whenever the desire for territorial expansion was mentioned or the uniqueness of Korean history had to be emphasized. Song's current mission is to research Buyeo history, including its connection to Korean, Chinese, and Japanese history, and show that Buyeo is an integral part of Korean history that should no longer be neglected.
