Overview

This book is a critical biography that is written to help children readers understand the life of Lee Jung-seob as well as the world of his art.

Book Intro

Lee Jung-seob, was born in 1916 as the youngest of three siblings in Pyeongwon District, South Pyeongan Province in North Korea. He was from a relatively rich family and studied in Japan but his life was not an easy journey. He lived a tough life since he experienced the Japanese occupation and the Korean War, the most painful events of Korean history, in a row. He couldn’t break the fetters of history. Living apart from his beloved family, he did the painting to appease his longing and pain. Like the lotus blooming in the mud, the artistic soul he cultivated in the tragedy and despair moved the world. This book is a critical biography that is written to help you understand the life of Lee Jung-seob as well as the world of his art.

We can’t discuss modern and contemporary art without making reference to him. Not only in textbooks for elementary school students but for high school students, the paintings of Lee Jung-seob are included. Why do we love him so much? Appreciating his works, people pity him living such a short life like a flame. In agony and depression his life was approaching the peak of a tragedy, but ironically his world of art reached its apex, producing a number of masterpieces. What was the ‘beautiful world’ he painted, the beautiful world he dreamed of? He never tried to take after anyone’s style of painting and drew the ox, rooster, crab, natural landscape, and children. All of them were things he could observe in the surroundings. They may be the objects so common and nearby that we tend to forget their importance.

About 40 percent of children’s nonfiction are biographies, stories of a renowned figure. Many biography books are published putting up various slogans of a great man, leader, mentor, but there are only a handful of those which introduce the life of artists. Those few that have been published are a children’s book in name but being close to be the specialized book for grown-ups when actually looked into. So, beginning with Lee Jung-seob, Who Dreamed of a Beautiful World, Sakyejul plans to publish the series called ‘Brilliant Artists.’
