This book has readers learn how environmentalists protect the environment with village members, what they do, and what makes them do that. The author Kang Mun Jong and the illustrator Lee Kwang Ick have long interviewed environmentalists and participated in environmental conservation activities in the creation of this book. The power of a lively on-the-scene reporting is displayed here and there in the book. Hanbyeol, the child hero of the book, and other children learn about the environment, protect the mountain in the village, and go on a field survey of the animals and plants living in the wetland with Bean, a teacher and an environmentalist. Children readers can learn and experience together with the characters.
The environmental movement covers multiple fields and includes a wide range of activities so it is not easy to introduce to children what environmentalists do. The authors of this book didn’t know how to begin the story at first and took pains in getting it right. Along the way, an environmentalist told them “the environmental movement is nothing but to protects lives,” which gave them a clue to developing the story.
This book carefully describes the heart of the villagers who want to live harmoniously with nature and the environmentalist who strives to keep their hope. The story informs readers of the environmental issues of our neighborhood and how environmentalists monitor, investigate, teach, survey, and record things to tackle the issues. It also explains what global warming, the recent major environmental issue, means. The book advises children about good the eco-friendly habits, how to prepare for an environmental field survey, and the supplies you need for one. The index after the body text introduces the environmentalists who pioneered the environmental movement even before the environmental issues were raised and the kinds of natural energy and renewable energy available to us.
