Book Intro

(Japanese)

(English) Everyone has a day when they want to cry. "I did nothing wrong but things go wrong and it seems God hates me," is an often heard lament by children. No need for today’s children, who have to endlessly develop competitiveness following a timetable tightly organized by adults, to say this. It is true for the main character of this picture book.

He takes an exam in the morning and eats an unappetizing lunch. During the class in the afternoon, the teacher scolds him for no reason. He is annoyed and feels it’s not fair. Anyway, he thinks the day is almost over and he only has to go home. But goodness no! The sky is covered with dark clouds in no time and it begins to rain. Was it forecast that it would rain today? Everyone has an umbrella except him. He wears a cardboard box to cover his head while going home. After arriving home completely drenched, he discovers that his mom and dad are fighting like two dinosaurs. It’s not surprising he loses his appetite but his mom scolds him for not eating his dinner completely. She doesn’t seem to express her love but just venting her anger. He tries to sleep but tears keep falling from his eyes.

He cries buckets and creates an imaginary sea. The sea of tears sweeps away those who made him upset. He rows on the sea of tears where they struggle and yell out a cheer riding the rapids. But after an enormous wave breaks, he finally saves his parents, teacher, and friends. And he regains his composure as far as he dries out his seatmate with a drier. He has eased himself now.

This picture book comforts children for their hard days and understands their tears in a positive way. It says, “dear, I know how you feel. Cry as much as you want.” and pats the children on the back to help them get rid of bad feelings on their own and smile again.
