Overview

This book contains a story about a gorilla and a hedgehog who find themselves happy to be together.

Book Intro

(English) It’s good to be out there

In this overnight camping story, you will meet two main characters. A gorilla, who is clumsy but trustworthy, and a hedgehog, who looks fussy with pointed thorns but in fact is considerate of his friend. Their conversation leads the plot in a charming way. They squabble all throughout. The careless gorilla fails to navigate or pitch a tent and finds it too much to make dinner alone. The hedgehog who refused to go on a camping trip follows and nags the gorilla. But at a critical moment, he does what the gorilla wants him to do. Watching them quibbling over trivial things, you will come up the people close to you. They can be the siblings, friends, parents, children, loved ones, or couples who are always together and argue with one another. You may newly discover the relationships it reminds you of, saying to yourself, ‘Oh, this is me. Oh, this is somebody.’ It naturally becomes your own story.

The quarrel seemed to continue forever, but the time comes when they say, “It’s good to be out there.” It is when they eat a delicious dinner, look at the night sky, and go to bed in the silent forest together. Before they know it, happiness has quietly come to them.

The story is quite simple. There is no extraordinary event and the relationship between the gorilla and the hedgehog is not exceptionally good nor bad. Nothing to make a thing of. It is as if our ordinary life with no special event is contained in the book. The monotony feels good and nothing new brings peace. Our ordinary life seems nice somehow. The heart that says “It’s good” to be able to occasionally look up at the beautiful sky even during the time without any special events, This kind of feeling is conveyed in the book.

The illustrations feel free that were drawn directly without a sketch. The forest drawn with oil pastel and ink feel fresh and lively. The drawings that were loosely drawn release the tension of your heart. The friendliness is also found in the handwritten sentences. The uneven writing goes well with the illustrations.
