Overview

This book informs readers of everything there is to know about herbivores.

Book Intro

(English) Neverland Zoo : Herbivores!

There are many kinds of animals in this world. Depending on what they eat, animals are grouped as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores. Of these, herbivores are animals that primarily feed on plants. Herbivores are typically peaceful creatures that exist in our ecosystem, who are adept at protecting themselves from ferocious beasts and adapt to their surrounding environment. As animals who are constantly preyed upon by others, these herbivores work hard to breed and have their own young.

The first volume in this series of five volumes, Herbivores tells the stories of eight species of herbivores that dwell at the Everland theme park: elephants, the largest land-based animal in the world; giraffes, the tallest animals in the world; giant pandas, round and sensitive creatures; red pandas, with their bright red fur; Bactrian camels, with two humps on their back; zebras, with their majestic white and black stripes; rhinos, big and smooth; and the Asiatic mouflon, wild sheep that grow to only about 120cm tall. An accompanying appendix describes other herbivores (such as the capybara and the red-necked wallaby) as well as their natural habitats. The book informs readers of the different types of herbivores and the animals that readers can meet at Everland's zoo.

The information, as described by zookeepers, is described in a lighthearted, casual manner that makes the book an engaging, never-boring read for young readers. The animals each have their own names, and it's clear that they and the zookeepers enjoy a fun companionship at the zoo. The stories of Kosik (elephant), Jangsoon (giraffe), Aibao and Lubao (giant pandas), Lessie (red panda), and Nalo (zebra) will make these animals seem more approachable to young readers, who will be delighted to learn more about their traits, personalities, and lifestyles.

Kosik, an Asian elephant, is already beloved in the zoo for being a "talking elephant." In fact, he is said to have repeated after his favorite zookeeper (who's cared for him for dozens of years) words such as like, sit, no, and lie down. Beyond offering information on the biology of elephants, these episodes tell readers of the surprising things that can occur when man and animal interact.
