When the storm of pain pours in, we tend to feel as if it will last forever. However, in terms of life as a whole, we spend a lot more time on the soil that has been dampened by the rain. The author Lee Hyo-geun is a physician who takes care of chronic schizophrenic patients in a mental clinic in the outskirts of a city in Korea. Everyday, hoping that his patients will be better than the day before and that they will endure a little more, he goes through their difficult treatment processes with them.
The author says that the lives of chronic schizophrenic patients are no different from those of ordinary people, who have to carry out their daily life even after a rainstorm of life. Even in a reality where it is difficult to expect complete healing or dramatic reversal, we have to walk steadfastly on the muddy path that rushes in after the rain. Through the author’s gaze that discovers a thin, shining hope in our daily life soaked in depression and fatigue, we will be able to learn the attitude of facing the next after pain.
A psychiatrist is a person who diagnoses and treats diseases only through the story told by a patient. However, it is not easy to understand the mind of a person who suffers from mental illness. Lee’s patients are those whose minds have shut out the world after suffering fatal pain. Lee says that it is his job to continue walking the muddy road without giving up on those who constantly fight their illness. Lee also looks at the chronic problems of our society alongside his patients’ illness. He hopes that curing mental illness may be the key to solving everyday problems that have become entrenched.
In Chapter 1, “I Just Listen Quietly,” Lee unfolds the episodes he has experienced and heard as a doctor. In Chapter 2, “The Thinly Sparkling Moment,” he whispers a little hope that shines in the muddy reality. In Chapter 3, “Ironing the Crumpled Days,” he explains the process of erasing the stains of the past. In this way, the book follows the gaze of the author who examines the blind spots of our daily life. This book teems with warm writings that dry up the dampened mind and episodes that make you look back on bad days.
