ALWAYS ON YOUR SIDE

- The Doctor’s Message for Your Heart

“I am always on your side in all circumstances.”

If you are in a difficult and distressing situation now, these words may feel like a helping hand. In a world where it is difficult to fully empathize with the pain of others, it is a miracle to meet someone who supports you without any judgment, evaluation, or compensation. This miracle leads to a greater miracle, one in which a person who is unable to stand, straightens their once bent knees, stands up, and takes steps.

Professor Han Chang-su, a mental health specialist, describes this series of processes with the term “post-traumatic growth” in his first book, Always on Your Side. In comparison with “post-traumatic stress,” “post-traumatic growth” refers to the processes through which those who are injured “heal” their minds and “grow” beyond the point of “recovery.” If the focus of psychological research so far has stayed in the “recovery” stage (resilience), Professor Han goes one step further and talks about the “growth” stage (post-traumatic growth).

Regarding post-traumatic growth, the author describes it as "nevertheless, rewriting one's life." In other words, it is “to become maturer in terms of personality and to strengthen the mind as you go through the process of breaking away from extreme psychological pain, but you have recovered not just to the previous level but have matured beyond to something better.” He points out the characteristics of people who progress after trauma in comparison with those with good resilience. After trauma, they reorganize existing relationships, exhibit gratitude, and faithfully focus on their lives. They are proud of what they have accomplished and acknowledge the irrationality of the world.

This book, which is based on a solid academic basis, is filled with comfortable writings and refreshing and warm paintings, reflecting the author’s affectionate disposition. He also broadens the range of empathy by sufficiently presenting examples and realistic solutions of those with mental problems he met both inside and outside the clinic.

If in this harsh world, there was a spell that could heal our broken hearts, wouldn’t it be “Always on your side”?
