A romance between a girl who has a secret and a boy who can only breathe behind the mask.
After the death of her dad, Yejin and her mom moves to a big city. On the first day of school, Yejin meets a boy in the library who is staring at her. His name is Choi Seoha. He is the top of the school, handsome, and kind-hearted. A golden boy. Yejin is well aware of her family’s struggles with the enormous debt after her dad’s long battle with cancer. She promises to devote herself to studying until she enters university and gets a job but at the same time can’t help but be attracted to Seoha who expresses his feelings for her arduously, albeit clumsily. As their relationship develops and she gets to know more about Seoha, Yejin becomes afraid of the other side of him. Finally, the truth is revealed despite his desperate efforts to hide it, and Yejin tells him a secret she has never told anyone…...
Treading a fine line between romance and thriller, the story revolves around Yejin and Seoha, a boy with a precarious inner self obscured by a beautiful exterior, and the confrontation of a secret he has been harboring inside. It won the grand prize in the romantic thriller contest receiving judges' comment: “it faithfully follows the basic formula of creating tension between romance and suspense of everyday life; a gripping development that keep readers on the edge of their seats.
The meticulously plotted setting of mystery, heart-fluttering romance, and gripping thriller are masterfully weaved together in this outstanding novel. It has two fascinating twists that come one after another revealing the dark secrets of the two protagonists, and the story appeals to various audiences from teenagers to adults. The female protagonist Yejin, an alter-ego of the author, represents the precarious and depressed youth. Yejin's remark that we all have a monster inside us as well as the truth to come at the end of the story conveys the author's message: no matter who we are, we are all fine.
