A 25-year-old writer’s remarkable debut novel surprises us with its fresh perspectives and frank expressions.

The story of us unprocessed by the language of grown-ups. 

This is a captivating story about six teenagers—each wounded in a different way—who step out to experience the wider world through their relationships with others. At some point in life, we all go through times of wandering. Unexpected Season sheds light on that experience through the perspectives and language of teens, rather than through the eyes of adults. The adult helper usually found in novels about a teenage protagonist is absent from this story, which means that the kids must deal with conflicts and obstacles each in their own way. It is touching to see them struggle to find their own path. Given that many novels about teenagers have been filtered through “the eyes of adults,” it is not difficult to guess where the novelty of this novel by a young author (born in 1994) comes from. 

Eighteen-year-old Ban Yoonhwan shuns the world because of a painful childhood experience. Ji Naroo is an outcast, ostracized from the rest of the world. Troublemaker Kang Eunbi likes Ji Naroo but always gives him the cold shoulder. Model student Kang Byul is tormented by regrets about the past. Perfect kid Yoon Geon has lost touch with his true feelings. These are some of the unique and fascinating characters who take a step forward into the world and share their wounds through their relationships with others. Whether we like it or not, we must deal with human interactions every day. Within that process, sometime we get hurt unknowingly. People say we become adults when we get used to the hurt. Yet, the author asks, “Is getting used to the hurt necessarily a good thing? Or, are we simply becoming hard-hearted?” As stated in the author’s preface, Im Haun has written this book in hopes of thawing readers’ hearts. Perhaps for that reason, the sincerity and truthfulness we find in the characters—even though they don’t promise a bright future or say that everything will be okay—present us with unexpected warmth and consolation.

각자의 상처로 웅크린 여섯 아이들이 타인과의 관계를 통해 세상으로 한 발 나아가는 과정을 흡인력 있게 그린 이 작품은, 한때 누구나 겪었고 혹은 지금도 겪고 있을 방황의 시절에 대해 기성세대의 시각이 아닌 십 대의 시선과 언어로 이야기를 풀어낸 점이 눈에 띈다. 특히 십 대가 주인공인 소설에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 조력자 역할의 어른이 이 작품에는 등장하지 않는데, 아이들 각자가 자신만의 방식으로 갈등하고 부딪히며 스스로 길을 찾아가는 여정이 뭉클하면서도 신선한 감동을 준다. 십 대를 내세운 많은 소설들이 실은 ‘어른’의 필터를 거쳐 나온 것임을 생각한다면, 94년생 작가가 쓴 이 작품의 새로움이 어디에서 기인하는지는 어렵지 않게 짐작할 수 있다.

어린 시절 상처로 세상과 선을 긋고 살아가는 열여덟 살 반윤환, 타인에 의해 세상에서 고립된 왕따 지나루, 지나루를 좋아하면서도 차갑게 대하는 문제아 강은비, 과거의 후회를 안고 살아가는 모범생 강별, 진심을 잃어버린 엄친아 윤건 등 개성 강한 흥미로운 캐릭터들이 각자의 상처를 매개로 타인과 엮이며 세상으로 한 발 나아가는 이야기다. 자의든 타의든 매일 누군가와 관계하며 살아가야 하는 우리는 그 관계에서 알게 모르게 상처를 받고, 그 상처에 익숙해지는 것이 곧 어른이 되어가는 과정이라고 말하지만, 작가는 묻는다. 정말 상처에 무뎌지는 것이 좋은 일일까? 혹시 그저 마음이 굳어가는 것은 아닐까? ‘작가의 말’에서 밝힌 것처럼, 작가는 누군가의 “굳어가는 마음을 녹여주길” 바라며 이 작품을 썼다고 한다. 그래서일까. 밝은 내일이 기다리고 있다고, 모든 게 괜찮아질 거라고 쉽게 말하지 않음에도, 무심하게 전해지는 인물들의 진심이 독자에게 예상치 못한 따뜻함과 위로를 선사한다.
