Overview

An art book comprising the making of the animation film Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs as well as various related art works and backstorie

Book Intro

An art book that shows the making of Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, a Korean 3D feature animation completed over a ten-year production period, as well as other related art works and backstories.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, an adventure story set in an upside-down fairy tale world, is in fact a modern fairy tale in which well-known classics are adjusted to fit today’s style and values. As much as it does away with stereotypes and shows happy twists, it also marks the debut of Korea’s 3D animation industry in terms of time, labor, and scale of investment. The book includes many artworks left out of the 92-minute running time of the 10-year-long project, various versions of the script, interviews with Chloë Moretz and Sam Claflin, and stories about how they were cast. Texts by director Sung-ho Hong and animation director Sang-Jin Kim and commentary from production teams and artists are also included.

Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs drew special attention for the participation of production members from the major studios such as Disney and DreamWorks. Sang-Jin Kim, character designer for Frozen II and Moana, worked on this film as animation director and character designer. Moreover, WooSuk Yang, director of The Attorney, worked on the early stages of story development. The book shows “how to make an animation” in detail through the production process of this film. The book is thus not only a document for those who love Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs and want to admire the pictures from up close, but also a good guide for those who want to work in the field of animation.
