Overview

A story about beans and three strong, wise mothers.

Book Intro

Dig a hole in the ground with a spoon, and place a bean inside... dig another and drop another bean in... After planting 15 beans, mom, covered in sweat, cried, "When will I finish planting all of these beans? I can't do it all on my own!" Then she yelled, "Mom! Come help me!"

This book features a story about four generations of mothers and daughters gathering together to plant beans. Mom, who is a city woman, takes on the challenge of planting in her red high-heels. But it's no easy task. So mom asks for help from her mom, and her mom's mom asks for help from "her" mom. That is how the narrator, the daughter, gets to plant beans with her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

The writer confesses that this story was based on experiences she had with her family. It teaches that in difficult situations, a family can unite and overcome the challenges. It is a picture book that will be more enjoyable when read by a grandmother, mother and daughter together.
