Overview

This book depicts a relationship with an absolute being, a teacher.

Book Intro

It is very important for children, especially elementary school children, who their home room teachers are. The home room teachers, with whom children spend most of their time, lead the class and have the power to make the children's year happy or unhappy. Children are affected greatly even by even trivial words from the teacher's, whether they be a praise or reproach, and so they try hard to be accepted by their teachers. While I Was Kim Soyeon-Jina describes a series of events that occur after the teacher assigns an introvert, Jina, to help a friend. It makes us think about how much influence teachers have on children.

The teacher thinks that Jina can do the job well because she is kindhearted and so asks her to help Soyeon, who is having a hard time adjusting to school life. Jina can't refuse the teacher's request, even as seeing the clever and shrewd Hana turn it down makes her more sure that she's not up to the task. In the confusion of wanting to be accepted by the teacher while being unable to say no because she is timid, Jina becomes the helper.

But, what if one child gives help to his/her friend, and the friend returns nothing? Such relationship is not possible for children in this age group. As expected, Jina struggles in her helper role, getting exhausted with nobody to help her. On top of that, a feeling of resentment has sprung up towards the teacher who gave her this job without realizing how hard it was for her, and the word "kind" doesn't sound like a compliment any more. The story of Jina and her teacher portrayed in this book delicately balances the perspective of the teacher, whose words could be considered an order, not a request, with the viewpoint of the student in the other end.
