A child is absorbed in watching TV although it is time to go to school. The child's mother hurries the child to school. This is the first scene of The Sound Monster, which is familiar to readers and makes them feel as if they were watching their own homes. Although we tell them to eat, go to school, be careful when walking, or make an apology, they do not listen to us. What ends up happening to all these words that no one listens to? Those words start to hold together and turn into a large sound monster. The world becomes noisy because of the enormous sound made by the monster, and accidents take place here and there since people cannot listen to each other. Scientists analyze the fact that the monster is messing up the city. People hold intense discussions on TV and radio. The troops and super heroes go to save the day. Despite of all these efforts, the sound monster only grows larger. People get exhausted after suffering all day. After the sun sets, while going back home, people think, How wonderful it would be if we could listen to others....
People start to carefully listen to the smallest words others say. At the dining table, in their warm beds, and over the phones with friends, pleasant conversations are exchanged. The sound monster begins to grow smaller, and the noisy world becomes quieter. The sound monster, now no longer having any reason to continue to hold out, runs away over the mountains and across the sea. After its entire body is shattered, this monster arrives at places where there is at least one stubborn person who does not listen to others. Has the sound monster indeed disappeared? Let's listen carefully.
