Overview

This is a must-read book for moms who are agonizing over their children's speech. It's Korea's first guide to childhood speech development and it was written by Dr Kim Sooyeon, a childhood developmental specialist, based on counseling materials she had compiled and research. The book proposes a "talking childcare," where parents communicate with children at an equal level of their language comprehension.

Book Intro

For parents raising children under five, speech is a very sensitive topic. Parents are on edge just hearing their child babble, worrying whether his/her speech will be later than others his/her age. But not much is known objectively about language acquisition in infants and toddlers. Thus, most of what moms "learn" on the subject is incorrect, and this leads them to choose improper educational methods. Dr Kim Sooyeon says that the language development of children between the ages of zero and five should focus on how well they can comprehend communication, and emphasizes that a systematic "talking childcare," which takes into account the developmental stage of the child, will be most beneficial for its future. This book kindly describes the talking childcare method for each development stage in months and years, from 0-5, with detailed illustrations.

To conduct wise childcare, parents first should identify a child's language comprehension level. Just saying long words with an expressionless face and no body movement doesn't help with language development for a child who just understands words. Rather it interferes with the communication with the child. Children's comprehension will improve when you talk to them at a level and in a method they can comprehend. Done properly, attachment and trust form between parents and children. Therefore, before talking to a child, you need to understand his/her character and developmental characteristics first. In this book, how the child understands the world and accepts people's words, and how the child expresses his/her thoughts at each stage of development, are explained in detail. In addition, the book includes how to talk to a child in each situation and how to respond to the child's expressions via detailed and warm illustrations. The child's language comprehension level can be checked easily at home with the evaluation guideline provided in the appendix.
