For children, play is a natural part of daily life. While playing, they learn, overcome bad experiences, and grow up. That's a well-known truth to all of us. However, children in this era are so busy studying that they never have enough time to play. Even when they do get a chance to play freely, they don't know what to do. Song Mikyong, the author of this book, has a brilliant solution for such children. "You just need to have a lot of fun over the whole day," says Song. 

The main character, Yuri, is not quite a good student, but she is adventurous and always confident. A good student, Siha, is so quiet that people don't know whether she is there or not and sometimes she is mistaken for a ghost. Useong loves playing with dolls. Hyeonbin always gives unsolicited advice to others and finishes his sentences with rhymes. Yeonghye is pessimistic, contemplative, and mature. The individuality of these five children is so distinct that sometimes they seem strange. A Weird Kid and Her Weird Friends contains small episodes of these five children respecting each other’s individuality, protecting their self-esteem with their own ways, and communicating with each other.

They get to know themselves better by getting along with friends who are a little or a lot different from them. They also learn about what moments make them upset, what moments they look forward to, and what the best activity to pass time is. They understand themselves better by playing with friends who have different thoughts and behave differently, and so the five children laugh, run, stay quiet, and complain in their own manner. As they do so, they grow up little by little. 

Illustrations of the children consist of unstructured free-form lines (just like children playing freely), which remind readers of their childhood.

The world is interesting because we have many different types of friends who all laugh with different voices. The author wrote this book in the hope that the children who can’t play enough will be able to learn how to have a fun day in their own way, and that the world in which they live will become a little more fun.

아이는 놀이와 삶이 분리되어 있지 않다. 놀면서 배우고, 상처를 극복하고, 성장한다. 우리 모두가 잘 알고 있는 사실이다. 하지만 요즘 아이들은 생활이 학습에 치우쳐 놀이가 매우 부족하다. 자유롭게 놀 시간이 주어져도 좀처럼 뭘하고 놀아야 할지 모르는 요즘 아이들. 송미경 작가는 그런 요즘 아이들에게 “그냥 재미있게 놀면서 하루를 보내면 된다”는 사이다 같은 말을 건넨다.
모험심이 많고 공부는 못하지만 주눅 들지 않고 당당한 주인공 유리, 조용해도 너무 조용해서 있는지 없는지 알 수 없어 자꾸 귀신으로 착각하게 되는 모범생 시하, 인형 놀이를 좋아하는 우성, 말끝마다 라임을 붙이며 온갖 일에 참견을 하는 현빈, 비관적이고 사색적이며 어른스러운 영혜. 『이상한 아이 옆에 또 이상한 아이』에는 캐릭터가 분명해도 너무 분명해서 이상해 보이기까지 하는 다섯 친구가 서로의 개성을 존중하고, 저마다의 방법으로 자존감을 지키며 서로 교감하는 소소한 에피소드들이 담겨 있다.
다섯 친구는 아주 조금씩 혹은 아주 많이 나와 다른 친구들을 만나며 자기가 누구인지 더 잘 알게 된다. 또 어떤 순간에 화가 나고, 어떤 순간을 기다리고, 무엇을 하며 놀 때 가장 시간이 빨리 흐르는지도 알게 된다. 자신이 생각하는 것과 다른 것을 생각하고 자신과 다른 방식으로 행동하는 친구들과 놀면서 자신이 누구인지 더 자세히 알게 된다. 그래서 자기답게 웃고, 자기답게 뛰고, 자기답게 침묵하며, 자기답게 투덜거리며 성장해 나간다. 이런 아이들의 모습은 아이들이 뛰어놀 듯 자유분방한 선으로 그려져 있는데, 가만히 보고 있으면 우리의 어린 시절이 살포시 포개진다.
세상이 재미있는 이유는 우리 주변에 여러 가지 모습의 친구들이 각자 다른 목소리로 웃고 있어서일 거다. 마음껏 놀지 못하는 현실에 놓인 아이들이 각자 자기만의 방식대로 하루를 즐겁게 놀 수 있게 되기를, 그래서 이 아이들이 사는 세상은 좀 더 재미있기를 바라는 작가의 마음이 빛나는 책이다.
