This the latest novel from Park Jeongseon, who continues to have an aggressive insight into the modern history of Korea and fundamental issues of mankind. The novel, Legacy, is the story of Yi Ham, the main character and a descendant of a pro-Japanese Korean family, trying to overcome the inherent contradiction within herself and put an end to the remaining pro-Japanese elements in her family. During the process, the story raises various issues related to punishing pro-Japanese Koreans in various angles, such as the suffering history of Koreans, realistic problems and the fears that prevent ethical choices, and the relationship between history and personal lives. 

The main character, Yi Ham spends her youth in a prosperous environment thanks to the pro-Japanese activities of her grandfather and her grandfather's younger brother, becoming a judge without much difficulty. Meanwhile, Kim Junho, who is about the same age as Yi Ham, lives a poor life because of his grandfather who participated in the independence movement. He passes away due to lung cancer, which developed because of the poor environment he was in. The story dynamically describes the senses of guilt and shames, and the psychological conflicts and worries of Yi Ham, who grew up in the same village as Kim Junho but lived a completely different life.

The story presents two completely different lives, one of pro-Japanese family and the other of anti-Japanese family, and shows how pro-Japanese and anti-Japanese frames were formed after Korea's independence. In particular, Yi Ham's grandfather held the position of governor, where he contributed to consolidating Japanese rule and fascism, and this had direct influence on the tragic family history of Kim Junho. After Korea's independence, the pro-Japanese Koreans who were not punished are represented by "Hannam-dong Grandpa" (Yi Ham's great uncle), who forms a strong cartel by collaborating with the dictatorial government.

Throughout the story, Yi Ham is in conflict between her surroundings and her beliefs. Between her family represented by her grandfather, and a new order represented by Kim Junho's grandfather, Yi Ham struggles to find the path she should follow. Yi Ham's indecision deepens as her grandfather cannot simply be labelled a greedy, evil person. Her grandfather was respected and idolized by villagers, had great knowledge and refinement, and is remembered as a kind elder to his granddaughter. While presenting a high-ranking pro-Japanese officer in different dimensions, the story becomes even more persuasive by depicting the long hesitation of Yi Ham and the evil past that brought her a happy childhood. Will Yi Ham be able to fix the wrongdoings of her family after 50 years?

한국 근현대사와 인간 본원적인 문제에 대해 치열한 통찰을 이어온 작가 박정선의 새로운 장편소설이다. 소설 『유산』은 친일파의 후손인 주인공(이함)이 자기 내부의 모순을 극복하고 가문의 친일과 그 잔재를 청산하려는 의지를 드러낸다. 이 과정 속에 우리 민족의 수난사, 윤리적 선택을 가로막는 현실적 문제와 공포, 역사의 줄기와 개인의 삶이 어떻게 얽혀 있는지 등 친일 청산을 둘러싼 다양한 각도의 문제들을 표면 위로 끌어올린다.

소설의 주인공 이함은 친할아버지와 작은할아버지, 즉 조부들의 친일 덕분에 유복한 환경에서 성장하며, 별다른 어려움 없이 순조롭게 판사직에 오른다. 반면, 이함과 비슷한 연배의 김준호는 독립운동을 한 조부 때문에 극빈자로 살다가 열악한 환경 탓에 폐암에 걸려 세상을 떠난다. 소설은 김준호와 한 마을에서 나고 자랐으나 정반대의 삶을 살아온 이함의 죄책감과 부끄러움, 그리고 심리적 갈등과 고민을 박진감 있게 서술한다.

소설은 이함 조부의 친일행적과 이와 대비되는 김준호 조부의 독립운동 행적들을 보여주며 광복 이후, 우리 사회에서 친일과 반일의 프레임이 어떻게 작용됐는지 보여준다. 특히 이함의 조부는 일제 말기에 군수를 지낸 인물로 일제의 파시즘 체제를 공고화하는 데 기여했고, 이는 김준호의 비극적 가족사와도 연결된다. 해방 직후, 청산되지 못한 친일 세력은 소설 속에서 ‘한남동 할아버지’(이함의 작은할아버지)로 대표되는데, 이 인물은 독재정권과 결탁해 공고한 카르텔을 형성한다.

소설이 진행되는 내내 이함은 자신을 둘러싼 환경과 신념 사이에서 갈등한다. 할아버지로 상징되는 가문과 김준호, 아버지로 상징되는 새로운 질서 속에서 그녀는 자신이 걸어가야 하는 길을 고뇌하는 것이다. 특히 이함의 망설임은 그저 탐욕적인 악인으로만 규정할 수 없는 조부의 인물됨과 관련하여 더 심화되는 양상을 보인다. 마을 사람들에게 존경과 경외의 대상이었던 조부는 학식과 교양을 겸비한 인물로, 손녀인 이함에게도 훌륭한 어른으로 기억되어 있다. 작가는 친일 고위 관료였던 조부를 입체적으로 형상화함으로써 이함의 고민이 왜 오래 지속될 수밖에 없는지 설득력 있게 그려낸다. 이함의 행복한 유년기를 만들어준 집안의 추악한 과거, 이함은 50여 년이 지난 후, 가문의 얼룩진 행적들을 단죄할 수 있을까?
