Princess Butterfly is a story about artisans who create silk flowers. Dorae's father is a royal silk flower artisan. Although he is highly talented, Dorae hates making silk flowers. He does not want to be a silk flower artisan like his father. He would rather become a peddler instead. Dorae's father takes him to the silk flower workshop. If Dorae lasts a year there, he will be free to live his life as he wishes. Dorae resolves to hold out for a year. Thus begins his life at the silk flower workshop. Amidst his busy schedule, he runs into Princess Jeongso at the workshop one day. Not realizing that she is a princess, Dorae treats her in a friendly way. The two become best friends. After meeting Jeongso, Dorae's attitude towards silk flowers changes. Through his time at the silk flower workshop, Dorae comes to understand his father. Just like that, Dorae takes a step closer to becoming an artisan.

『나비 공주』는 채화를 만드는 사람들의 이야기입니다. 궁중채화장의 아들인 ‘도래’가 주인공이지요. 도래는 타고난 솜씨와 지식을 가지고 있었지만 채화가 싫었어요. 아버지와 같은 채화 장인이 되고 싶지 않았지요. 채화를 만드느니 차라리 봇짐장수가 되고 싶었지요. 방황하는 도래를 아버지가 채화 공방으로 데려갑니다. 딱 1년만 견뎌 보고, 그래도 싫으면 살고 싶은 대로 살라고 하면서 말이에요. 도래는 딱 1년만 견뎌 보겠다고 마음먹었지요. 그렇게 채화 공방 생활이 시작되었어요. 분주한 나날이 이어지는 가운데 도래는 우연히 공방에서 임금님의 딸인 정소 공주를 만납니다. 도래는 정소가 공주인 줄 모르고 허물없이 대했어요. 둘은 단짝 친구가 되었습니다. 정소를 만나고부터 도래는 채화를 대하는 태도가 달라지기 시작합니다. 채화 공방에 머무르면서 아버지를 이해하는 마음도 생겼지요. 그렇게 도래는 ‘장인’의 길로 한 걸음씩 들어섭니다. 『나비 공주』는 도래가 정소 공주와 만나 채화를 꽃 피우기까지, 그리고 어엿한 장인으로 성장하기까지의 여정을 담은 이야기입니다. 오늘날 세상은 빠르게 변해 갑니다. 민첩하고 영리하게 처신하는 것이 미덕인 것처럼 여겨지지요. 사람들은 ‘일등’, ‘성공’이라는 목적지에 도달하기 위해 부단히 지름길을 찾고 재빨리 경로를 바꾸어요. 어른들만큼이나 아이들도 치열한 경쟁 속에서 살아갑니다. 이런 시대에 한길을 우직하게 걷는 채화 장인들의 모습은 어쩌면 답답해 보일지 몰라요. 하지만 무언가를 꾸준히 노력하여 끝내 이루어 내는 것은 여전히 가치 있는 일입니다.
