The Namhangang River is often referred to as the Yeogang River by the people of Yeoju. In a village by the Yeogang River, a child spends each day with the river. She and her friends go swimming in the river. When autumn comes, she takes a walk in the golden reed field with her father. Then one day, strangers appear in the village and start building a dam under the pretext of saving the river. The Yeogang River gradually undergoes many changes. Its glittering sand disappears, along with many of its fish.
The Four Major Rivers Restoration Project that started in 2009 ushers in a new era for the Yeogang River. There are now bicycle paths as well as the Gangcheonbo. An experience center named Hangang River Culture Pavilion has been established. Those who know nothing about the Yeogang River in the old days may think things have improved. However, the Yeogang River has lost its natural beauty. In addition, as the river's velocity decreases, the water quality deteriorates and algal blooms occur.
We often forget that we must live in harmony with nature. That means any harm done to nature ultimately comes back to us. Let's Live by the River makes us think more about the importance of nature. Park Chanhee's serene writing meets Jeong Lim's beautiful illustrations to create a deep impact on the minds of readers.
