Hello, John is a story about a boy who looks forward to visiting his grandmother during vacation. The contrast between the simple illustrations that look as if drawn by a child and the colored pencil drawings makes us see the story in two different ways. Until his grandmother appears wearing a traditional Vietnamese hat, we do not realize he is from a multicultural family. It is some time before we find out that his friend John is a dog at his grandmother's place in Vietnam. Isn't this an example of our prejudice?
