The winner of the 6th Korean Digital Writing Competition. Park Haik’s fiction is an anti-war mystery that deals with the mysterious phenomenon of victims who are revived after death to kill their perpetrators, raising a question of “What would be the ultimate judgment that a sinner must face?” This fiction is also the original text that the movie “Resurrected Victims” starring Kim Raewon and Kim Haesook is based on.

In the foreseeable future, the unfortunate victims of murder come back to life. The revived victims search for the perpetrators and kill them before becoming extinct. People call them “Resurrected Victims (RV)” and feel frightened at this unexplainable strange phenomenon. But at the same time, they become hopeful that the truth of the unfortunate death will be revealed.

Among those RVs, Myeongsook who was stabbed to death 7 years ago is quite different from others. The person she tries to attack is not the pickpocket that killed her but her own son. The National Intelligence Service (NIS) and the CIA, which have been trying to capture "unvanished" RVs for their research, suspect her son Seo Jinhong as the true criminal considering the fact that she attacks him. Seo Jinhong and Choi Myungsook are arrested and go through a series of psychological examinations and interrogations. In the meantime, the criminal who stabbed her is caught and enters the interrogation room, and the three of them come face to face. And the truths begin to surface one by one...

Park Haik’s Case Closed summons the old proverb “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” and seriously questions the weight of the punishment that should be given to the sinner. What would be the ultimate judgment that those who kill others must face? What is the purpose of judgement? Reformation or punishment? Should we forgive the perpetrators? Although the ending of the novel may not be the ultimate answer to this question, the readers must mull over the issues and messages presented in the story.

가까운 미래, 억울하게 죽은 살인 사건의 피해자들이 살아생전의 모습 그대로 돌아온다. 되살아난 피해자들은 자신을 살해한 가해자를 찾아 직접 죽인 후에 소멸한다. 사람들은 이들을 ‘환세자(RV, Resurrected Victim)’라고 부르고, 설명할 수 없는 이 괴현상에 두려워하는 한편 억울한 죽음의 진실이 밝혀진다는 점에서 희망을 갖는다.
하지만 7년 전 소매치기의 칼에 찔려 죽은 명숙은 다른 RV들과는 다르다. 그녀는 자신을 죽인 소매치기가 아닌 자신의 아들을 향해 공격 반응을 보인다. RV 현상을 연구하기 위해 소멸하지 않은 RV를 실험체로 얻으려는 국정원과 CIA는 명숙이 진홍을 공격한다는 점에서 서진홍을 사건의 진범으로 의심한다. 그들은 서진홍과 최명숙을 구속하고 두 사람에게 각종 심리 검사와 대질 심문을 행한다. 한편 명숙을 찌른 진범이 그 과정에서 잡혀 들어오고, 마침내 세 사람은 한자리에서 마주한다. 그리고 하나씩 숨은 진실들이 수면 위로 올라오기 시작하는데…….
“눈에는 눈, 이에는 이.”라는 오래된 명제를 부활시킨 이 작품은 죄를 지은 자에게 내릴 수 있는 형벌의 무게에 대해 진지한 사유를 던진다. 과연 사람을 죽인 이에게 사회가 내릴 수 있는 가장 완전한 심판은 무엇인가? 벌의 목적은 교화인가, 처벌인가? 우리는 과연 가해자를 용서해야 하는가? 소설이 제시하는 결말이 이런 사유에 대한 궁극적인 해답이 될 수는 없더라도, 우리가 분명 고민해야 할 문제들과 메시지를 던져주고 있는 것은 틀림없다.
