Overview

A children’s fiction portraying the love and dreams of thirteen-year-old athletes in the swim team and the healthy development of the body and heart.

Book Intro

(English) <Lane 5>

A children’s book sparkling like water, portraying the dreams and love of thirteen-year-old athletes in the swim team. The story revolves around Kang Naru, the star athlete in lane 5, which symbolizes second place. The book was awarded the Grand Prize at the 21st Munhakdongne Children’s Literature Award after winning praise from all members of the jury for splendidly portraying the healthy growth of the mind and body, for introducing readers to a confident and independent young female protagonist, and for depicting the children’s problems of love and their dreams in a sincere light and in a well-balanced manner.

“Understanding the honest body, serious contemplation about one’s future, and the experience of overcoming fear.A healthy and confident, young female protagonist is born.” - A jury comment

“The sight of the children personally selecting their own paths and pursuing them at full throttle was dazzling, and the scenes of throbbing hearts and excitement, friendship and love under the blue summer light were clear and fresh.”- A jury comment

“Some stories pull us into the scene in the story. Lane 5 makes you want to jump into the water and move your entire body. It’s a story about swimming, but it is also a story about everything. - A jury comment

“With some books, only after you read it do you realize that you had always wanted to read a book like that. It appears I wanted to read a story about a girl playing a sport, a careful and sensitive love story, a story that brilliantly completes a part of one’s childhood. In fact, after reading this book, my friends and I contacted each other – as excited as the spectators in the swimming arena. The year 2020 was full of gloomy days, but this is how far our children’s books have come.” - Kim So-young, author of The World of Children
