Книга «Девочка-пылинка» состоит из рисунков, выполненных в филигранной технике карандашной графики. Главная героиня Ючжин просыпается после бессонной зимней ночи и начинает уборку, которую долго откладывала. Сначала она обнаруживает крошечную девочку-пылинку на своей кровати, а затем, наводя порядок в каждом уголке дома, повсюду находит таких же девочек. У каждого бывают в жизни моменты, когда мысли переполняют тревоги и заботы. В такие моменты уборка в доме, которую давно было пора сделать, мытьё посуды и душ помогают как-то развеять кажущуюся бесконечной тоску. Конечно, это не значит, что все заботы куда-то исчезнут, равно как и пыль, которая через некоторое время после уборки снова скопится тут и там. Однако мы снова собираемся с силами и протираем вновь скопившуюся пыль. «Девочка-пылинка» помогает через повседневный опыт уборки обрести маленькую, но ценную мудрость жизни.

(English) Dust Kid

Dust builds up again soon after being wiped off, and this dust is the mirror that reflects ourselves.

Dust Kid, a picture book by Joung Yumi, became the Winner of the Bologna Ragazzi Award in the New Horizon category. The Ragazzi Award is an award given to picture books with excellent literary value out of over 1,000 entries from 42 countries throughout the world submitted to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which is the world’s largest of its kind. Established in 1966, this award corresponds to the Nobel Prize in the field of children’s books. Joung Yumi, who drew Dust Kid, is South Korea's first author honored with the award.

Said the judges on the award selection panel, “Dust Kid creates its powerful, silent sequence without text based on the pictures from the animated film. Its black and white imagery forms the contrast to tell the story of an ordinary life in intense detail and describe the tiny moments in time.”

Composed of meticulous pencil drawings, Dust Kid's story unfolds on one winter night when Eujin, the main character, stays awake and starts cleaning up her room. Eujin first discovers a small dust kid on the bed and soon meets other dust kids one at a time here and there in the course of clearing up the nooks and crannies of the house. The author Joung Yumi carefully does each pencil illustration to describe how the main character puts the dust kids away one by one. The picture book contains drawings selected from 5,000 detailed hand-drawn pencil drawings.

Every one of us agonizes and worries at some time or another. When such a time comes, doing the cleaning and dishes we've put off and then taking a shower help relieve the depression that seems to continue. The worries are not gone forever, though. It is like dust, which soon piles back up again after being wiped off. At one moment, you may find yourself being absorbed in anxiety again. Nevertheless, you realize that you need to pull yourself together once more to wipe away the dust. Dust Kid helps readers discover this small but priceless piece of wisdom through the ordinary experience of cleaning.

닦아내어도 얼마 지나지 않아 다시 뽀얗게 쌓이는 먼지는 우리를 비추는 거울이다.

정유미 작가의 『먼지아이』가 2014년 볼로냐 라가치상 뉴호라이즌 부문 대상의 영예를 안았다. 라가치상은 세계 최대 규모인 이탈리아 볼로냐국제아동도서전(Bologna Children's Book Fair)에서 전 세계 42개국에서 1000권이 넘는 응모작 가운데 작품성이 우수한 그림책에 주어지는 상이다. 1966년 제정된 어린이 도서 분야의 노벨상 격이다. 한국 그림작가로서 대상을 받은 것은 『먼지아이』 정유미 작가가 최초이다.
심사위원은 “『먼지아이』는 애니메이션 영화로 만들어진 그림을 기반으로 강렬하면서도 텍스트 없이 침묵의 장면 장면들을 엮었는데, 흑백이 대비를 이루면서 일상의 세밀한 묘사나 작은 순간들의 표현이 매우 뛰어나다.”라고 선정이유를 밝혔다.
세밀한 연필 드로잉으로 구성된 『먼지아이』는 주인공 유진이 잠들지 못한 추운 겨울밤, 미뤄두었던 방 청소를 시작하면서 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 유진은 침대 위에서 조그만 먼지아이를 처음 발견하고 집 안 구석구석을 청소해 가는 과정에서 방안 곳곳에서 또 다른 먼지아이들을 차례로 만나게 된다. 정유미 작가는 주인공이 먼지아이들을 하나하나 치워나가는 과정을 한 컷 한 컷 정성껏 연필로 그려나간다. 손으로 그린 연필 세밀화 5000장에서 엄선하여 그림책으로 만들었다.
누구나 머릿속에 근심, 걱정이 있을 때가 있다. 그럴 때, 미뤄두었던 청소를 하고 설거지를 한 후 샤워를 하고 나면 계속될 것만 같았던 우울함이 어느 정도 해결되는 경험을 한다. 물론 그렇다고 해서 그 고민이 완전히 사라지지는 않는다. 마치 닦아 낸 후에도 얼마 후면 다시 뽀얗게 쌓이는 먼지처럼. 어느 순간, 자신도 모르게 근심 속으로 다시 빠져드는 모습을 발견할지도 모른다. 하지만, 또 힘을 내어 쌓인　먼지를 닦아 나가야 한다는 작은 깨달음을 얻게 된다. 먼지아이는 청소라는 일상적인 경험을 통해 작지만 소중한 삶의 지혜를 발견하게 한다.
