Overview

This cartoon tells a lyrical story about the school life and emotions of a girl who is in sixth grade in the summer of 1998.

Book Intro

(English) Summer at the Age of 13

Summer at the Age of 13 adopts a light, cozy drawing style and distinguished production ability to provide a full, rich description of the deep, detailed emotions of teenagers.

Summer at the Age of 13 thoroughly depicts the emotions of thirteen-year-olds Hwewon and Sanho, who have become to like each other. During summer break in 1998, Hwewon travels to a beach with her family when she meets Sanho, who is in her class, by chance. The two develop emotions for each other after an incident where Sanho found Hwewon's hat that was blown away by the winds. There is also class president Baek Woojin, who likes Hwewon, and Jeong Ryeo-hui, who likes Woojin. These unmatched emotions of the surrounding characters make the story more interesting.

Author Lee Yoonhui shows what it is like to like someone through characters that have different personalities.

The story begins in the summer, with skies as blue as the ocean, and then moves onto autumn and winter. The incidents and experiences that thirteen-year-old Kim Hwewon and her friends go through in moments of joy and sorrow build up and arouse sympathy. It provides lively descriptions of the simple, yet secretive daily lives of elementary school students, such as secretly placing a note, confessing emotions, in the desk drawer of the intended note recipient, exchanging diaries with a best friend, eating stir-fried rice cake on the way home after school, and mixing chocolate powder in milk. Scenes from the 1990s especially remind adult readers of when they were in school, such as waxing school floors, stopping by a video rental store on the way home, and jumping on the trampoline. This heart-warming work encourages readers who have already experienced the age of 13 or who are about to experience it to think about the exciting feeling of liking someone and valuable friendships.
