Choi studied design in college and later learned picture books through a workshop at the Wonju Picture Book Center. She was an imaginative child, as she often doodled in the margins of her notebooks during class. For her, picture books became a medium where she could communicate freely through both words and images. She co-illustrated Thank You and was selected as a featured author for the 4th “Un-printed Idea” publishing support program with her work Curious, Curious. When the Lights Go Out at Changdeokgung is her first picture book, inspired by the many questions that came to her while leaving Changdeokgung after a visit.​
