Go Yuseop
  • 고유섭

Go Yuseop (M) is Korea's representative art historian as well as philosopher in aesthetics. He was the first Korean to study art history and aesthetics at the philosophy department of the College of Law and Literature at Keijo Imperial University. He set the foundation of Korea's modern academic system in art. That is, he systemized the Korean art methodology through historical research on art works and records. He worked as the director of Kaesong Museum in 1933 and left many research achievements, such as Joseon's Celadon and Research on Buddhist Stupa by personally traveling throughout the peninsula to research relics, ruins and works of art. Go's excellent perspective in defining the characteristics of Korean beauty as the "technique of no technique" and "unplanned" and describing our traditional beauty as a "great, savory flavor" had a big effect on not only art but also academia from the liberation until the present day.
