Hong Yunpyo graduated from the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Seoul National University, where he also completed master’s and doctoral programs. Hong taught as a professor at Jeonbuk National University, Dankook University and Yonsei University; served as the chairperson of the Society of Korean Language and Computation, the Association of the History of Korean Language, the Association of Korean Linguistics, the Society of Korean Linguistics, and the Korean Association for Lexicography; and was the head of the Seoul branch of the International Society for Korean Studies. He also led the South Korean compilation committee for the Gyeoremal-Keunsajeon, a Korean dictionary for North and South Korea, and served as the chair of the National Hangeul Museum opening committee. He wrote Literature on Korean History (I): Modern Era (1993), The 17th Century Korean Dictionary (1995), The History of Our Living Language (2009), Korean Language and Information (2012), and The Story of Hangeul volumes 1 and 2 (2013). His books have been awarded the Dongsung Academic Research Award, the Sejong Academic Award, the Ilseok Korean Language Studies Award, and the Oesol Award.
