The author Jeon Hotae graduated from Seoul National University with a BA in Korean History and received his PhD in Korean History from the Graduate School at Seoul National University. He worked for the National Museum of Korea as academic researcher and served as director of the University of Ulsan Museum, director of the University of Ulsan Archives, cultural property appraisal committee member and expert commissioner at the Cultural Heritage Administration of the Republic of Korea, and chair of the Korea Petroglyphs Research Association. He was also a visiting professor at U. C. Berkeley and Harvard University. Currently Jeon is a professor in the department of History and Culture and the director of the Institute of Bangudae Petroglyphs Preservation at the University of Ulsan. He specialized in ancient cultural history and has written and published many articles and books about petroglyphs in Korea, tomb murals of Goguryeo, and ancient Chinese art. His representative writings are Stories of Goguryeo Tomb Murals; Goguryeo, the Center of the World; A Study of the Cultural History of Goguryeo Life.
