Lee Heon-hong graduated from the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Pusan National University, where he served as a professor from 1982 to 2013 and currently serves as a professor emeritus.   His works include Kim Tae-Rahk's Oral Storytelling, The Life History and Literature of Koreans in Japan, and A Study on Korean Epic Literature in Northeast Asia.
