- Book Intro
-
From the Irish potato famine and the passion of former Russian leader Khrushchyov for corn to Ghandi's salt march against the Salt Law, The World History on My Dinner Table provides 10 stories behind different ingredients. This book does not trace simply the origins of each food or ingredient; it instead tells readers about the important history of the world in detail. The interesting facts in this book, such as the hot taste of black pepper that triggered the Age of Discovery or the Dongo pork created by Chinese poet Su Dongpo, will attract the interest of readers. Also, the author cleverly introduces important history of the world such as the Cultural Revolution and the Opium Wars. The story encompasses the path to the modern era, but it doesn't describe the facts in periodic order. It is also very interesting that food was used as a means to introduce history to readers, and the author strikes a balance between the west and east when introducing history. Readers can naturally learn about the world's history with food as the link.
