Overview

This books tells the story of a detective, who solves cases with just twenty questions, and his exploits with his friends.

Book Intro

Twenty Questions Detective and Magician tells the story of Mun-yang, a 5th-grade student, and his thrilling adventure with Detective Twenty Questions and a magician with the ability to read people's minds. Miffed at the fact that his mother refused to buy him a new plastic model kit, Mun-yang plays a game of cards with the Magician to win some money but he loses the money given to him for an after-school academy. Upset over his loss, Mun-yang and his best friend Myeong-kyu seek out Detective Twenty Questions for help. The card game is simple. The Magician shuffles ten cards and places them face down. The opponent draws a card, and the Magician guesses the number. If the guess is incorrect, the Magician loses the game. No one is able to beat the Magician at this simple game, and Mun-yang suspects that he may be able to read people's minds. To solve this mystery, Mun-yang seeks out Detective Twenty Questions. Just from his outer appearance, it's clear that Detective Twenty Questions is not like anybody else. Dressed in a long-sleeve shirt, vest, pressed suit pants, and black dress shoes, he and his cool demeanor stand out like a sore thumb among elementary students. His specialty is his ability to solve cases with just twenty questions. Full-scale psychological warfare begins the moment Detective Twenty Questions and the Magician meet.

This series of books won an award at the 1st BIR Story King, which was the first in Korea to adopt a child jury member system. The story is about the adventures of a twenty-question detective who solves a case based on only 20 questions and his friends. The first book was published in 2013 and the final, 12th book in 2020. Every book immediately became a bestseller among books for children. The series continually received great interest and significant support from readers.

Season 1 (Books 1 to 4) deals with the encounter between the twenty-question detective and his colleagues. Season 2 (Books 5 to 8) is about the various activities of the twenty-question detective and colleagues, with the detective's office as the background. Season 3 (Books 9 to 12) consists of chapters where the fate of the twenty-question detective is determined.

This story of friendship and loyalty features a diverse cast of characters not commonly found in other Korean children's books, and it elaborately weaves two stories to deliver a sense of excitement to readers each time a question is answered. Plus, the illustrations expertly capture each character's unique personalities. Author Kyo-bum Heo knocks it out of the park with his debut work, which is sure to grab the attention of young readers.
