Book Intro

"Goh Tae-gyeong the Q&A Villain by Jung DaeGun—the winner of the 2020 Hankyung Spring Literary Contest—tells the story of Cho Hye-na, an independent filmmaker who has not been unsuccessful at the box office. One day, she meets an argumentative man named Goh Tae-gyeong at a post-screening Q&A, and decides to make a documentary film about him. Those who ask rude or strange questions at such Q&As are known as Q&A villains and Goh is one of them. This novel makes careful observations of contemporary society and presents a fresh new interpretation, while at the same time leading us to imagine the loosely connected community around films and theaters, and unfolding a heartwarming story about what goes on within that community.

The scope of the novel is not limited to the film industry. Rather, it is about ‘villains’ that we encounter in our daily lives and failures of today’s youth. Goh once came within inches of getting a great opportunity as an assistant director to a famous director.  However, a project that looked so promising went to pieces; he was stabbed in the back by someone he trusted and fell into deep despair. Cho Hye-ha’s life has not been vastly different. She dedicates herself to filmmaking, but frequently regrets the choices she’s made as a director. She reminds us of our own lives where we’re faced with choices every day. Our best efforts do not always yield the best results. The novel takes a close look at things we love without losing sight of them, and tells us to focus on moments when we can say “Okay” with ease. In other words, we realize that there are ‘Okay’ moments on top of moments of success and achievement.

“I wanted to do a good job. I made no major mistakes and worked hard on the storyboards. How come we always end up hating what we used to love?” Hye-na’s question reflects the way our success-driven society makes us hate the things we used to love and feel guilty about our very existence. Everyone is required to fulfil their role, and is forced to make constructive choices only.  Hye-na realized that life is nonsensical and mainly consists of disappointing outtakes. “Being professional at making choices is impossible to start with. I’ll continue to make mistakes and have regrets, but at least I won’t hate what I love.” Her statement makes us consider our obsession with accomplishment and life beyond that."
