An old couple strolls along a quite large lake. A man walks ahead and a woman follows him, but he does not slow down. The distance between the two grows wider. How many couples truly know the exact reason they break up? The man and the woman soon split up. The woman is a novelist who is eking out a living by writing an interview script for a corporate newspaper after publishing a book a few years ago. Upon breaking up with her boyfriend, she meets an interviewee “Egg” who became a singer through the audition program and yet whose unhappy family history has been more widely known than his singing.

Orphan. Waiter at a karaoke bar. Owner of a cart bar. A boy who was abandoned upon birth. That was Egg who had undergone an unfortunate childhood and lived his life in the backstreet bars and adult entertainment districts. During the interview with him, she gets to know about his life story and misfortune that he has endured. But she finds it difficult to believe in him. The stories he tells her sound just like a movie. And his whole body is covered with scars and burn marks. She finds it difficult to take these traces of violence and abuse as though they are nothing.

But why does she feel drawn to the past than the present? Would she have tried to compare miserable Egg with her ex-boyfriend Handu and to justify their parting? Determining to be separated from Handu by being connected to Egg is probably one of the processes that everyone goes through when they break up with their lover. Interview requires interviewees to summarize their life in a short limited time. And when we are requested to summary our own lives, we cannot help but to think of unhappy moments in the past. Because of the long journey we have taken through the tunnel of past memories always leads us back to the past.

And every break up weighs heavy on our mind. Yet, it is a small ritual we perform to get rid of the memories, which end up erasing the memories of our ex-boyfriends or girlfriends. The woman in Will of the Moon deletes her ex-boyfriend from her memory upon parting with him. Then she learns that she can never step forward without looking into and forgetting her past.

오래된 연인이 꽤 큰 호수를 산책한다. 남자는 앞서 걷고 여자는 뒤따라 걷지만 그는 걷는 속도를 줄이지 않는다. 간격은 갈수록 벌어진다. 정확한 작별의 이유를 알고 헤어지는 연인은 얼마나 될까. 그렇게 두 사람은 헤어진다. 여자는 몇 년 전 책을 한 권 펴냈고 지금은 대기업 사보잡지에서 인터뷰 꼭지를 맡아 근근이 먹고사는 소설가. 방금 남자친구와 헤어진 그녀는 공교롭게도 오디션프로그램을 통해 가수가 되었으나 노래 실력이 아닌 불우한 가정사로 시청자에게 널리 알려진 ‘에그’를 인터뷰하게 된다.
고아. 단란주점 웨이터. 포장마차 주인. 태어나면서 버려졌던 아이, 에그. 불우한 유년기를 지나 뒷골목 술집과 유흥가를 벗어나지 못했던 청년. 그녀는 에그를 인터뷰하면서 그의 인생에서 가장 평범한 부분, 즉 어쩔 수 없이 받아들이게 된 ‘불행’에 대해 알게 된다. 그녀는 에그의 이야기를 들으면서도 그를 믿을 수가 없다. 영화에서나 나올 법한 이야기들. 온몸에 흉터와 불에 덴 상처로 덮인 그의 몸. 그 폭력과 학대의 흔적들을 그녀로서는 당연히 받아들일 수 없었다.
그녀가 에그의 지금보다 불행했던 과거에 끌렸던 건 무엇 때문이었을까. 그녀는 불행한 에그와 헤어진 남자 ‘한두’를 견주어 스스로에게 정당한 헤어짐의 이유를 얻으려 했던 건 아니었을까. 한두에게서 벗어날 의지를 에그를 통해 다짐하게 되는 것, 그건 누구나 겪는 이별의 과정일 것이다. 인터뷰는 할애된 짧은 시간 동안 자신의 삶을 요약해야만 하는 일이다. 내가 나의 삶을 요약하고자 할 때 가장 먼저 우리는 불행을 떠올릴 수밖에 없다. 과거의 터널을 지나 현재에 오기까지의 긴 여정의 요약은 언제나 과거 안에 있기 때문이다.
　모든 이별은 각자의 무게만큼 해롭다. 결국 작별은 폐기한 기억을 기억에서 멀어지게 하는 어떤 가벼운 제의다. 그런 제의는 철저히 상대를 지우는 형식으로 행해질 뿐이다. 그녀는 이별하면서 과거인 한두를 지웠다. 과거를 어떤 식으로건 이야기로 만들지 않고서는 앞으로 나아갈 수 없다는 사실을 에그를 통해 체득한 셈이다.
