Book Intro

From Sisun

Chung Serang has always given her readers new surprises through a wide range of works from sci-fi novels told with her own unique voice and worldview to stories with a firm grasp on the reality of our time. Chung makes her return with the full-length novel From Sisun, a masterpiece that took five years from conception to completion and was released four years after Fifty People, a novel for which she won the Hankook Ilbo Literature Award.

"We're going to hold our family’s ancestral rites in Hawaii."

From Sisun is a women-centric story spanning three generations centered on Shim Sisun, a woman who dared to rebel against the violence and oppression of her times. Shim Sisun is an artist and writer ahead of her time. The story begins as the members of Shim's unique family, resulting from her two marriages, travel to Hawaii to conduct familial ancestral rites.

Along for the journey with Shim, who suffered through the tragedy of the Korean War and ventured in search of a new life, are her daughters Myeong-hye and Myeong-eun, both of whom survived the end of the 20th century, and her granddaughters Hwa-su and U-yun, who are both currently living in the 21st century. The lives of the women from Shim's lineage reveal a new era of possibility for Chung's readers. Hwa-su, withdrawn due to the horrors committed by a coworker, attempts to find the words to explain the distorted and polluted view of her world. Hae-rim was bullied because she expressed anger at the racist remarks suffered by her friend, but she does not regret her choices, nor does she give in. Gyeong-a wants to empower the women behind her after seeing them endure adversity just as Shim had.

"Above all else, this novel is a 21st century love story dedicated to women who survived the 20th century."

As Chung Serang reveals in the preface, From Sisun is a work that stems from an honest and endearing view of women from a certain period. Ten years after her debut, Chung, who has never disappointed readers despite telling a variety of stories across multiple genres, has returned as a writer who exercises love rather than one who only writes lovely novels.
