(English) Gorillas Hate Smartphones

Gorillas Hate Smartphones is a cultural book on the environment that describes, in an easily understandable way, how products and goods essential to our daily lives affect the environment and the future of the Earth, and gives possible solutions to environmental problems.

This book describes in plain language specific examples of environmental problems that can be observed in our lives, and explains that there are many simple things we can do to mitigate such environmental problems in order to keep the Earth clean for our descendants.

Why do gorillas hate smartphones? The Congo, a country in Africa, is a main producer of tantalum, which has an excellent ability to withstand high temperatures. As tantalum became commonly used as a main component of smartphones, its price skyrocketed to 20 times its usual cost, and many people dreaming of a big fortune flocked to tantalum mines. As a result, Kahuzi-Biega National Park, located around the mines, was severely damaged and habitats of rare species of gorillas in the park were also devastated.

Due to the fact that the book contains a lot of statistics and information on the environment from 5 years ago, the present edition has been updated. In addition, the section "what happens when the switch is on" deals with nuclear power generation and the Fukushima nuclear disaster in detail. Furthermore, the present edition contains a new section titled "the joy of do-it-yourself", which begins with the author's story of hemming her own clothes.

Considering that the contents of this book are used in discussions and essay subjects for middle and high school students, questions selected by essay educators are included in the "developing ideas" section so that the book can be utilized as study materials in schools.

Recommendation

Woo Seok Hun(author of 880,000-Won Generation), 2006, In the 90's, it was common for many college students to commute to school by driving their own cars, but today, the majority of college students don't even think about acquiring a driver's license. It is an age of universal poverty. Younger generations living in this age have started saying "I love the Earth." This book is a great introduction to those youngsters who are determined to love this planet. Now, let your heart be filled with love for the Earth.

Hwang Dae Gyeon (author of Wild Flower Letter, director of the Ecology Community Movement Center), 2006, Park Gyeonghwa, the author of this book, is one of the most influential environmentalists in Korean society. Park constantly rings a wake-up call for modern people who unconsciously live anti-ecological lives.

Choi Yeol (president of the Environment Foundation), 2006, This book fits the concept "think globally act locally." It is a must-read for those who wish to participate in the environmental movement but find it difficult to take action, and for readers who realize that environmental movement is actually closely related to their daily lives.
