(English) Grandma, Where Are You Going? I’m Going to Pick Cherries!
Ok-i's story has been serialized in Gaettong's Playground, a journal published by Bori Publishing, for two years under the title, Where Are You Going Grandma? The story was published for each season—spring, summer, fall, and winter. Where Are You Going Grandma? I’m Going to Pick Cherries! is the summer story. It tells a story of the summer: people make sweet wine with sweet and sour cherries, and mulberries; they cook salads with nutty pigweed that grows on the bank of the fields and sharp namunjaengee plants that grow in mudflats; the villagers gather together and have fun splashing in the sea. This picture books shows the humble and happy life of Ok-i and her grandmother, who find precious and tasty foods in nature, share those foods with their neighbors, and sometimes sell them at the market. Read this book with city children who do not know where their rice, potatoes and sweet potatoes come from!
We are going to pick plump cherries and fat mulberries!
On a summer day, when blackbirds chirp, the cherry tree and mulberry tree that Jaedong's great-grandmother planted are laden with red cherries and black mulberries. Ok-i's grandmother picks cherries and mulberries and makes wine with them. People in the market drink the wine that Ok-i pours for them, and they feel happy.
When you have a stomachache, nutty pigweed is the best cure!
On a sweaty, hot day, Ok-i eats an ice-cream bar that she bought from a corner shop in her village. She eats strawberry, grape, watermelon and chocolate flavored ice-cream bars and gets a stomachache. Her grandmother picks pigweed from the bank of the field and feeds the seasoned pigweed salad to Ok-i. After eating her grandmother's home-made pigweed salad, Ok-i's stomachache is gone, like a miracle.
At the low tide, you can see a lot of sharp namunjaengee plants in the mudflats!
The villagers make sweet, sour and salty namunjaengee salad and go on a picnic to the beach. They ride waves, take a sand bath and have tons of fun at the beach until the sun sets.
