The most confidential record that no king, not even one with absolute power, could ever access. This massive collection of 2,077 books is registered as UNESCO's Memory of the World in the recognition of its universal value.
The Annals of Joseon Dynasty, a history of more than 500 years, is still significant as it contains various aspects of Joseon era, including politics, economy, and culture. In fact, in the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, real voices of kings and subjects are quoted without editing. Harsh criticisms by annal writers are also recorded intact. So reading the Annals is like reading the bare face of Joseon era. And the bare face is much similar to that of Korean society now.
Seol Minseok's Annals of the Joseon Dynasty is a selection of important incidents during the reign of Joseon's 27 kings. The book captures Seol Minseok's unique, inspiring simplicity and witty tone in casual language. The question-and-answer section that appears occasionally in the book makes readers feel as if they are sitting in the front row of a lecture room. In addition, the voice of kings is made to be heard in the modern language so that readers can understand the situation and context of incidents more easily.
Through this book, historical events that Koreans used to memorize blindly will come to be understood, one by one, and the fragmented knowledge will be put into the right places.
Further, the book boldly discards the outdated style of existing history books in that it gives readers a pleasure of reading by shedding a light on a king as father, son, and husband beyond a ruler.
Although the title has changed from King to President, their policies and roles have a profound impact on people's lives. More than 600 years ago, King Sejong gave a male parent a month of parental leave, and over 420 years ago, King Sunjo abandoned his people and pursued his own comfort. The greatest pleasure of reading the Annals of Joseon Dynasty comes from obtaining "an eye to evaluate the role of leaders" and "insight into the future."
