We live in an era of "synthetic biology" in which humans are able to design life. This field began with bacteria, but it has expanded to include reviving extinct animals such as mammoths and even editing human genes. CRISPR gene editing technology - which can easily correct, design and modify life - is expanding rapidly, and along with it the debate on whether to apply CRISPR gene editing technology to the fertilized eggs of humans is rising as an important social agenda. In comparison to the rapidly advancing technology of life sciences, the social discussions about synthetic biology and gene editing are not making much progress. It is necessary to discuss various subjects related to life and science which will continue to expand due to the rapidly advancing life science. This book is written for the purpose of accurately portraying scientific facts about synthetic biology and gene editing, and establish a foundation for various social discussions. It describes the current status of and latest information about modern science as well as domestic and international regulations related to synthetic biology, for the purpose of identifying the political conflicts that arise between the promotion of the bio industry and the prevention of unknown risks. This book also introduces different perspectives from ethics, philosophy and religion on synthetic biology, gene editing and synthetic lifeforms.
