Overview

This book provides scientific insights on "sociability," the biggest concern of modern people living in a society that has become more complicated with the development of media and technology.

Book Intro

(English) I Have Trouble Being Social

Why did Professor Jang Dae-ik, who always so sociable among scientists, volunteer to be a "lone scientist"? As he shared his insights with readers of his previous book, Ultra Social, which dealt with the powerful sociability of humans, or "super-sociability," he became convinced that we are living in an age where sociability is an issue. Even Jang Dae-ik, who was proud of his sociability, was in fact worried about being caught by his students when eating alone and always wanted to get away from any meetings where he had no acquaintances. He realized that he was a timid individual who was concerned about sociability.

So he gave four lectures on what science is saying about sociability and human relations, which he wanted to share with us. This book contains the results of that sharing.

If the social brain is beyond the range of acceptable relationships, it is necessary to give yourself time to isolate yourself (Dunbar's number). However, if it is not solitude but loneliness, it causes the same pain as physical pain (activation of the dorsal cortex), so if you are chronically lonely, try to escape it. If you do not want to be swayed by others, but are worried that it is happening, bear in mind that knowing the health of proper openness is not a bad thing (synchronous study). This book shares our concerns about relationships, loneliness, reputation, competition, influence, and empathy.

The book also introduces some well-known research as well as new experiments by Professor Jang Dae-ik (Ego Network experiment after AlphaGo and Lee Se-dol), which adds more interest.

I Have Trouble with Sociability, written by Professor Jang Dae-ik of Seoul National University's Department of Liberal Arts and Engineering, who studied about the evolution of human sociability and the evolution of human empathy in the age of AI, will be a fresh stimulus and cool comfort for modern people who are concerned about sociability. As we get to know the sociability inscribed in the human nature, we will be able to understand ourselves better and be a little more comfortable with our myriad relationships.
