Overview

An unexpected friendship heals loneliness.

Book Intro

(English) Greg and a Chick

The curtain is closed, the flowers in the vase have wilted, and there are only a piece of cheese and rotting tomatoes in the refrigerator. This is Greg’s house. It is raining nonstop outside, and Greg hears his stomach growling. Greg is lonely and hungry. But because he hates rain, he doesn’t want to go out. Feeling down and out, Greg looks out the window and stares at the rain. Who is Greg? He is anyone who is missing a friend or has experienced being bullied, ostracized, or hurt. The book does not go into Greg’s story, but simply shows Greg as he is: terribly lonely, depressed, and apathetic. Where is the chick from? The story does not tell readers how the chick came out from the egg Greg had bought at the market, and the chick is an unexpected visitor to Greg’s house. But Greg has no interest in the chick. He has closed his heart, and he is unable to open up even to the small bird that has entered his life so suddenly and unexpectedly. To Greg, the chick is like a gift. The chick does not ask why Greg is feeling sad. All it wants to do is help him feel better. Even when Greg chases it away, the chick thinks only about a way to help him. The chick is able to wait patiently for Greg to open up. It is small and inexperienced, but it is able to empathize and is willing to help him even when he doesn’t want to be helped.

(Japanese) Greg
