People’s expectations for the peace and reunification of the Korean Peninsula has risen since the 2018 South-North Summit Talks. But, after experiencing numerous disputes and tension surrounding reconciliation, we do not think the world will change in a day. This is because we know that a fundamental solution to the Korean Peninsula problem starts with change in the relationship between North Korea and America, and that the North Korean nuclear issue stands in the center of the relationship between North Korea and America.
Representative Cheong Wooksik, who launched the Peace Network in 1988 and carried out various activities for the establishment of the peace system of the Korean Peninsula as well as the peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue, thoroughly reviews the 80-year interaction between nukes and humans from Einstein’s 1939 letter to "The Negotiation of the Century" between Kim Jeongeun and Donald Trump in 2018 to figure out what effects nukes have on the modern history of the Korean Peninsula and how the nuke has transformed international relationships.
The author says he wanted to remove the 25-year old superstition of "being deceived by North Korea." Fortunately, it was possible to accomplish such a purpose through the declassified documents of the U.S. government, the diplomatic documents disclosed by Wikileaks, and the research results of foreign researchers.
This book looks at World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War between the East and the West, and a gradual détente one by one through the prism of nukes. It is shown that historical events do not exist individually and rather occur by means of the forces striving to maintain dominance through the nuke or the counter-forces fighting against it and the conflict of interests among countries. To this end, a focus is put on the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula while embracing major scenes of world history related to nukes. In addition, this book approaches the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula by dividing it into the 4 areas: "the first nuclear era", "the 1.5th nuclear era", "the second nuclear era of the Korean Peninsula" and "the era of real negotiation."
